Where Do Tears Come From?

Did you know that there are tears in our eyes all the time , even if we are not crying?

Our eyes are being washed constantly. They are bathed by a salty fluid we call tears.

Most tears are produced by the lacrimal glands in the eye. A lacrimal gland lies at the upper, outer corner of each orbit. Every time we blink, the eyelids bring down drops of tears from the tear glands.

The tears help in washing away dust and other foreign matters and keep the eyes healthy. Tears also keep our eyes from drying out. Tears are collected in the corners of our eyes and flow out through special openings and when we cry, muscles in our eyelids tighten and squeezes the tear fluid out of the tear glands.

Then the tears flow too fast to be drained away. So they spill over your eyelids and run down your cheeks. The same thing may happen if you laugh out loud.

According to the German Society of Ophthalmology, women cry on average between 30 and 64 times a year, and men cry on average between 6 and 17 times per year. Men tend to cry for between two and four minutes, and women cry for about six minutes.
